Abstract

This article presents an analysis of three works published in Portugal between the 1770s and 1780s that address versification: Regras da versificaçaõ portugueza (1777) by Francisco José Freire, Tratado da versificação portugueza (1777) by Pedro José da Fonseca, and Tratado da versificação portugueza (1784) by Miguel do Couto Guerreiro. The hypothesis proposed is that these materials, aligned with post-Pombaline intellectual consonance, revolve around the construction of a new Portuguese versifi- cation, modeled on Luzes da poesia descubertas no oriente de Apollo (1724) by Manoel da Fonseca Borralho. In this new configuration, meter and rhythm are separated from the subject matter, while poetic forms emerge or are replaced, paving the way for a more open and abstract conception of poetry, culminating in a reformed proposal of syllabic counting.
