Abstract

Camões poses unanswered questions to the reader throughout his poetry, from rhetorical to metaphysical. His questions capture the existential predicament and paradox of his age, that of the world against itself, the disconcert of nature, and the futility of his hopes. By questioning the very nature and possibility of poetry in a world of exile, Camões confirms its irrepressible ideals and its persistence through the rigorous and unrelenting self-analysis of this direct questioning.

Author Biography

Kenneth David Jackson, Yale University

Professor de literatura luso-brasileira na Universidade de Yale. Doutorou-se com Jorge de Sena na Universidade de Wisconsin. Interessa-se pelos movimentos modernistas na literatura e artes, na cultura portuguesa na Ásia, na poesia, música e etnografia. Entre seus livros: Palavras em Rebeldia: o jornalismo de Patrícia Galvão (Pagu); Cannibal Angels: Transatlantic Modernism in the Brazilian Avant-garde; Machado de Assis: A Literary Life; Adverse Genres in Fernando Pessoa; Oxford Anthology of the Brazilian Short Story e o CD-ROM Luís de Camões and the First Edition of The Lusiads, 1572. Foi professor da Fulbright no Brasil e atuou nos EUA como violoncelista em várias orquestras e num quarteto de cordas.
