Abstract

The article, after a succinct biographical sketch of Luís de Camões, deals with the presence of the poet and the man at the advent of his fifth centenary, his importance as founder of the modern Portuguese literary language, the vicissitudes of the reception of his work in Portuguese-speaking countries and in throughout the world, of its centrality in the epic genre in Western literature, and of his unshakable permanence.

Author Biography

Alexei Bueno, PEN Clube do Brasil

Poeta, ensaísta, crítico, tradutor e editor carioca, nascido em 1963. Publicou vinte livros de poemas, além de numerosos títulos de crítica literária, bem como sobre arquitetura, artes plásticas, cinema e história, com edições no Brasil e no exterior. Recebeu prêmios como o Jabuti, duas vezes, Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte, Fernando Pessoa, Academia Brasileira de Letras, Biblioteca Nacional, duas vezes, Candango de Literatura, entre outros. É autor de uma edição comentada d’Os Lusíadas (1993, 2018), dos Sonetos de Camões (1998, 2019) e de Camões, em nós, por nós, (2024).
