Abstract

Among Camões studies, it is common to draw parallels between Os Lusíadas and Virgil’s Aeneid, seeking support for certain interpretations. This is a fair choice, as Aeneid is clearly the source of Camões’ poem. Less common is the study of the differences between the two poems, which do exist and therefore cannot fail to be significant. The aim of this work is to study the differences between two episodes that critics often compare: Dido, from Aeneid, and Inês de Castro, from Os Lusíadas. A careful reading reveals a lot of differences, which scholars do not usually pay attention to.

Carlos Ascenso André, Universidade de Coimbra

Professor da Faculdade de Letras de Coimbra (aposentado) e Professor Honorário da Universidade Politécnica de Macau. Membro efetivo e atual Presidente do Conselho Científico da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. Doutoramento em Literatura Latina. Tem 34 livros publicados – ensaio, tradução, poesia e crónica. Entre esses livros: O poeta no miradouro do mundo – estudos camonianos (2008); Virgí-lio, Eneida (edição bilingue, com tradução, introdução e anotações, 2022); O essencial sobre a “Eneida” (2024). Recebeu o Prémio Jacinto do Prado Coelho em 2006; prémio D. Dinis, da Fundação Casa de Mateus, referente a 2023. Dedica-se em especial à literatura latina e ao Renascimento, e Ca-mões é um dos poetas a que tem dado especial atenção.
