Abstract

The Lusiads is an extraordinary epic, owing to the way it brings together – without dissolving them – historical, symbolic, and existential contradictions that the Poet voices through his own persona as the enunciating agent. The subjectivization of the epic – ultimately an epic-lyric text – even accommodates the clash between the initial Proposition and a clear Antiproposition at the end of Canto VII, where the Poet banishes from his song all those unworthy of it.

Author Biography

Helena Carvalhão Buescu, Universidade de Lisboa

Professora catedrática emérita na Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa, onde fundou e dirigiu o Centro de Estudos Comparatistas. Colabora regularmente com Universidades estrangeiras, em especial na Europa, Estados Unidos, Macau e Brasil, onde tem sido professora ou investigadora convidada. Membro da Academia Europaea e membro efectivo da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. É ainda membro do St. John’s College (Cambridge Univ.). Publicou dois livros de poesia, e tem um outro no prelo (Presenças humanas). Entre os vários livros de ensaio que publicou, os mais recentes são Heranças imperfeitas (2025) e Camões Poeta, Herói n’Os Lusíadas (2026). Traduziu ainda Proust e prepa-ra um livro intitulado Oitocentos.
