Small words and other forms of resistance A girl is lost in her century looking for her father, by Gonçalo M. Tavares
Abstract
With an acerbic and fragmentary writing, Gonçalo M. Tavares, in A girl is lost in her century looking for her father, combines words with other symbolic codes (numbers, dots, dashes) and in the gap between these rare connections he makes silence and emptiness, and in a special way, forms of “silence of the emptiness”, express the unsayable and the ineffable. This presence confirms the author’s effort to recreate literary writing in this context of crises and language dehumanization. Taken the encounter of the main characters of this novel with Agam Josh, the artist, the present essay discusses the possibility of the “silence of the emptiness” being able to offer resistance to the echo of words and the superficiality demanded by everyday life as well as saying the unsayable. Therefore, the references are based on Paz (2012), Tofalini (2020) and Gonçalo M. Tavares’ writings.
