There lived a random old lady
Abstract
This paper analyzes the story “A velha”, by Teolinda Gersão, published in Brazil on the anthology Alice and other women (2020) and intends to present thoughts about the precarious conditions regarding elderly people in contemporary society. Submitted to a mediocre and lonely life, we will see how much the old lady is forgotten by her own family as well as by History itself. The journey of these pages echoes the question: what is the position of elderly people in our present society? Thinking about her, the last section of this paper turns its eyes on the death of the old lady and it emphasizes the importance of a humble home, her only register in time and in space. In that house abandoned by time, there lived not just anyone but an old lady.
