This study presents information on three productions of Os Lusíadas staged in Brazil –specifically, in theaters within the city of São Paulo. The first premiered in September 1972, under a military dictatorship; the other two premiered in March and November 2001, respectively, in an environment of full democracy. They share certain commonalities: the circumstances of their production, a notable date or commemorative event; and the involvement of the Luso-Brazilian theater producer Ruth Escobar. Each of the three productions featured a distinct dramaturgical approach – developed by Carlos Queiroz Telles, José Rubens Siqueira, and Valderez Cardoso Gomes – resulting in three (or more) dramatic adaptations of Camões’s epic poem. Drawing on the scripts for all three productions and typewritten accounts regarding two of the adaptations – both by playwright Carlos Queiroz Telles – this study examines the adaptation process, aiming to understand the resulting stage and dramaturgical outcomes within their respective historical and political contexts.
